A Bit About Me

Julia Messick is an award-winning filmmaker based in Brooklyn, New York. With over ten years of directing experience, her narrative work illustrates themes of coming of age, family drama, and mental health. She has directed over forty films, including narratives, documentaries, experimental films, fashion films, and commercials. As a producer, she is skilled in managing productions with the ability to execute a creative vision with care. Her experience working on over 150 film shoots has allowed her to hone her skills in each area of filmmaking, such as cinematography, art direction, and production management. She recently graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Film and a minor in Fashion Design. She is continuing her education at NYU for a MA in Media Producing.

Her thesis film production,“Funnel Cake”, is currently in a festival run around US, screening in festivals in Florida, Massachusetts, and California to name a few. The film has won seven awards, in categories like "Best Female Student Director" and"Best Florida Drama". Her experimental film, "Solstice", was added to the Community Access library for the film's authentic depiction of mental health. Through this, Julia has been featured on BronxNet TV and Conversations on the Block radio show to talk about her experience in making this film. The film recently premiered at the East Village Angelika with the Changing Minds Young Filmmaker's festival.

Since 2022, Julia has worked as Co-CEO of Indigo Studios NYC, a Brooklyn-based multimedia production studio. The studio has five team members and a portfolio of short films, animations, and a feature-length documentary.

Served as Co-CEO with founder Amouri Edwards.
Produced, Directed, Filmed, or Edited for 23 films ranging from narrative short films, music videos, to feature documentaries created or in association with the Indigo production studio.
Responsibilites include creating or editing film concepts, script writing or script notes, casting direction, location scouting, creating call sheets or timed shot lists, and working on set to manage the production.

Content Creator/Editor for Lighthouse Ladies social media platforms through ideating and producing content following a self-created content schedule.

Documentary Production Intern, Director of Photography

Urban Justice Center

Collaborated with the Director of feature Documentary, "Becoming", currently in post-production. This documentary follows the Free to Be Youth fashion show process.
Assisted the Director through sending emails to prospective shooting locations, fundraising outreach, and journalists for press.
Researched and pitched ideas during the Pre- Production process.
Took on role of Director of Photography, developed the visual language for the documentary, created shot lists for each of the 14+ shoot days, kept updated logs to track footage. Shot with Canon cameras.
Filmed, edited, and published vertical social video content for the Free to Be Youth Social Media Instagram and TikTok page. Communicated post deadlines and managed other interns for social media posts to stay on a consistent schedule.
