A Bit About Me

Julia Messick is an award-winning filmmaker based in Brooklyn, New York. She has spent more than ten years directing films that explore coming of age, family drama, and mental health. Julia has directed over forty projects, including narratives, documentaries, experimental, and fashion films. Working on more than 150 film shoots has helped her develop skills in all departments on set. She recently earned a BFA in Film with a minor in Fashion Design from Pratt Institute and is now pursuing an MA in Media Producing at NYU.

Her thesis film, “Funnel Cake,” has screened at over twelve festivals across the US and been honored with awards such as "Best Female Student Director" and "Best Storyline." This fantasy drama short tells the story of Janie, a misfit in her family, who discovers a magical ring that lets her choose between freedom in isolation or her demanding life. Julia’s experimental film, "Solstice," premiered at the East Village Angelika during the Changing Minds Young Filmmaker's Festival and has been featured on BronxNet TV and the “Conversations on my Block” podcast to spark discussions about mental health. The film is available on Amazon Prime, Google Play, and Apple TV.

She’s a hands-on creative producer who enjoys bringing concepts to life with care and attention. She gravitates toward narrative dramas and thrillers, especially those that explore mental health through a surreal or whimsical lens. Her producing work has been recognized at film festivals, with recent projects screening at New York Shorts International (“Lear’s Shadow,” directed by Michael Cherry), Nitehawk Film Festival (“Pawn Shop,” directed by Amouri Edwards), and Canada Shorts (“Christine,” directed by Nyah Gazda). She has also produced commercials for record labels like Def Jam, Boom Records, and Artist Theory, as well as music videos for NYC underground artists Perry Maysun, Raydeoworld, and WHATMORE.

Since 2023, Julia has served as Co-CEO of Indigo Studios NYC, a Brooklyn-based multimedia production studio. The studio has a portfolio of over twenty-five pieces including award-winning short films, animations, music videos, and a feature-length documentary.

Produced, Directed, Filmed, or Edited for 23 films ranging from narrative short films, music videos, to feature documentaries created or in association with the Indigo production studio.
Responsibilites include creating or editing film concepts, script writing or script notes, casting direction, location scouting, creating call sheets or timed shot lists, and working on set to manage the production.

Documentary Production Intern, Director of Photography

Urban Justice Center

Collaborated with the Director of feature Documentary, "Becoming", currently in post-production. This documentary follows the Free to Be Youth fashion show process.
Assisted the Director through sending emails to prospective shooting locations, fundraising outreach, and journalists for press.
Researched and pitched ideas during the Pre- Production process.
Took on role of Director of Photography, developed the visual language for the documentary, created shot lists for each of the 14+ shoot days, kept updated logs to track footage. Shot with Canon cameras.
Filmed, edited, and published vertical social video content for the Free to Be Youth Social Media Instagram and TikTok page. Communicated post deadlines and managed other interns for social media posts to stay on a consistent schedule.
